Accommodations for Student
Residential Colleges
A residential college is an accommodation provided by the college or university. It usually has some useful facilities for the students, such as: library, computer rooms, music practice rooms, etc. It also provides academic and pastoral support. Because of its short distance to the college or university, most of the students would want to stay there. However, it is often full of occupants.
Student apartments
Student apartments generally have a quite modern design. They are self-contained yet they also have communal spaces such as pool, fitness center, etc. Apartments’ providers usually organize social activities for residents. There are a number of apartment styles available, e.g. studio, one bedroom, two bedrooms, etc. Some apartments are fully furnished while some are not.
Student hostels (1 bedroom)
A student hostel provides single (or shared) rooms with communal living spaces. Hostel providers usually also organize social activity for residents. The cost for student hostel is cheap, and a student can rent a small room with shared bathrooms.
Shared house (with at least 2 other students)
Students can rent out a house from a landlord or real estate agent. They can rent an already established share house or set up with friends. Usually, the tenants need to provide their own furniture and they also need to take good care of all bills. They can share the costs for maintenance, electricity, and etc. altogether. Some houses have a backyard / small garden, and the tenants also need to take care of it. One thing that should be considered before you and your friends decide to rent a house is the compatibility with each other. Shared houses is usually available in the suburbs and it is more spacious than apartments.
Homestays
A Homestay is a type of accommodation in which students rent a room and live with a local family. A homestay is one of the best choices for the “first time coming” international students because they can learn better about the local culture and also improve their English. Some students may stay in a home stay for a long time (until they graduate) because they get a really good care from the host family, rather than while living alone in an apartment.
There are some homestay options available, e.g. part-board (accommodation only), full-board (accommodations plus meals) and board-in-exchange (accommodation in exchange for house hold duties, e.g. cleaning, child minding).
P.S.: Each institution/ university offers various type of accommodations, the regulation might also differs between one and another. We strongly suggest you to choose one of the options offered by the respective university.
